PEPPINO: A Sicilian who fought against the subculture mafioso
100 STEPS BETWEEN THE HOUSE OF THE PRINCIPAL AND HIS VICTIM
Among the home of Peppino Impastato, and that of Gaetano Badalamenti, there are 100 steps! Who knows how many times he passed Peppino Don Tano when the shutters do not yet know how it would end!
This is the story of Pepper, a young Sicilian who until his death was able to fight against the Mafia subculture.
Born in Cinisi January 5, 1948 and he attended the party of. He grew up in a family linked to the Mafia by blood and interest, in a community dominated dall'omertà and silence, the father, Luigi Impastato, gregarious mafioso, head of a clan and a member of a more extensive, with ideological connotations typical of a rural and sparsely industrialized civilization, the father's sister married the boss Cesare Monzelli, one of the best-known Mafia bosses.
Peppino decides to rebel against the "normalcy" of living with the Mafia in 1965 and became part of political life, with the need to react to a family-run unsustainable because his father had striven since its birth, to impose its choices, and its code of conduct. Often you are in conditions of oppression and constraints from which it is hard to get through, the only weapon to defend themselves is the strength with which you can believe in their ideas.
At the same time, anger and despair to PSIUP lands for protection and founded a newspaper and a movement of opinion, ends up in court and all the newspapers. Then leave the PSU, will participate in the student protests of '68 to the early occupations.
Switch stages of dark despair to elation and moments of real creative ability, to prove there were the foundation a vast movement of opinion among the young, the proliferation of party headquarters in the area and the first experiences of struggle of the neighborhood.
often turns away from reality and it becomes difficult for him to establish a linear relationship with the outside world: they live in a state of uncontrollable instability.
In 1975, the club organizes "Music and Culture", an association that promotes cultural activities and music and that becomes the primary point of reference for the youth of Cinisi. In 1977 Peppino Impastato and his group of friends to create a private radio station "Radio Aut" an issuer that directs his decisions in the field of counter-and especially that of satire against the mafia and representatives of local politics. Through this can make known their ideas to many people, expressing themselves freely, to explain that the Mafia is an illegal system that can only be considered a sort of Anti-State, and denounce the speculations of the boss to sign his own condemnation. One means at our disposal to combat the mafia is trying meanwhile to fight against ignorance because it is this' last one that makes us slaves of illegality.
In 1978 he took part in municipal elections with a list Cinisi, but on May 9, two days before the election, was assassinated. His body is ravaged by a charge of TNT Mail on the rails of the railway line Palermo-Trapani. The surveys are, at first, focused on 'hypothesis of a terrorist attack consumed by the same dough or a suicide, "striking." The court case was closed and reopened three times, until you get the current process, still ongoing, against the boss Gaetano Badalamenti Cinisi Vito Palazzolo and his accomplice, accused of being the masterminds of the crime.
Pepper has left a great legacy, he made us understand that young people are essential to the future of our society, able to discern good from evil and take advantage of our rights, so that no one rid us of our freedoms. All we have to imitate
Peppino, follow his example, knowing how to rebel and say NO to the Mafia! Only then can we live in a better world, where the illegalities are reported and justice set in the foreground.
